If you’re still using regular old soap and water when it comes to washing your face, you’re definitely missing out on a major skincare hack. Skimping on the soap also allows makeup and pollutants that might have been on your face all day to sink in, which means your pores could get bigger and cause all kinds of problems if they get blocked up or clogged. There are no rules when it comes to your skin—you can use any moisturizer you want—but it’s a good idea to slather it on while your skin is still damp, then rinse off with cool water. The #1 rule when it comes to skincare is to make sure to eat clean, and if your diet is anything like ours, that isn’t always a possibility.
We’ll start with the obvious: Moisturize your lips. Not only will this help them to look plump and pouty, but the moisture in your lips helps to prevent them from drying out, which is one of the most common skin concerns for those of us who regularly wear lip products. Makeup can make lips appear thinner, so this is a no-brainer. The basic, go-to method for removing all the layers of makeup that inevitably clog pores and over time create unsightly blackheads is to wash your face with a face wash. So the trick is to make sure we’re making a concentrated effort to keep our skin young. “This process begins with preparing the body by increasing the blood flow to the skin,” explains NYC dermatologist Dr. Rebecca Kazin. “It can be done by incorporating exercise and participating in activities that increase heart rate. These are all important to ensure blood flow to the skin so we can remove the toxins and also increase oxygen supply for the skin to make the collagen we need to repair the damage that occurs with aging.”
If you’ve done any amount of sheet masking, then you know that most are bulky and restrictive—they’re meant to be applied sparingly, after cleansing, and then leave you with a hydrated, plump complexion—a visual, high-fashion, and super-lit look that works best for those looking to pull of a straight face. For some instant results, instead of wrapping your freshly spritzed sheet mask around the corners of your face, start by placing the entire mask right onto your cleansed skin, just underneath your eye and right under your brow, and patting it gently downward. This should leave you with a clean face and a perfectly shaped triangle of product that’ll allow you to get the most benefit from the sheet mask without holding it on too long.
Exfoliating is really a big part of that whole skincare regimen. Skin is never going to feel clean, un-dried, and smooth if you’re constantly scrubbing at it with rough, too-pore-clogging cleansers.
