Section 1: What Is Street Food?

Delicious Street Food Recipes. Often referred to as street food or snack street food, this type of food originates from hawkers selling street food on the sidewalks of Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Africa, and even parts of South America. Though these establishments do not serve refined and elegant dishes, they still try their best to please and satisfy the most demanding palates. For this section, we’re focusing on street food from India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, which make up the largest street food market, covering 15,000,000 square feet.

It’s not always what you’re used to though. Especially in the rural villages in these regions, the open streets and large open spaces are not meant to be clean or organized with a structured layout.

10 Delicious Street Food Recipes

Fortunately, some tasty street food recipes will satisfy those cravings without sending you over the edge.

1. (Sweet) Kuchen

If you’re living in Austria, you might recognize this fried dough treat that’s somewhat reminiscent of an American doughnut. Like other similar dishes, there are two main variations of the doughnut—the weisskuchen, and the kuchen. To start, the weisskuchen is made with a solid dark chocolate doughnut topped with a thin layer of white icing.

Meanwhile, the kuchen is a cake that is filled with sweet cream or fruit.

How to Make Kuchen

1. Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl until smooth and thoroughly combined.

2. Divide the dough into three pieces and knead each piece separately for five minutes.

Thai Mango Sticky Rice

You’ve probably had sticky rice, but probably not like this. This isn’t your usual sticky rice — this has spicy coconut, sliced mango, cashews, and peanuts in it, as well as fresh basil, cilantro, chilis, and mint.

Chinese Roast Duck

One of my favorites is roast duck. I always thought it would be too challenging to do right. Until I tried it. The dark meat here is braised, shredded, and pan-fried and the skin is extra crispy. Add a few veggies like broccoli or green beans and call it a meal.

Golden Naan Crispy Pizza

Vegetarian Naan Pizza

Cheese and Veggies on Naan

Easy Naan Rolls

Easy Pasta

With these easy recipes, you can have a food coma-free day.

Special thanks to Riya Mehrotra, Meagan Lenahan, and Jeni Johnson for the recipe ideas.

Pad Thai

Looking for an amazing option that’s easy and doesn’t require a ton of special ingredients? Pad Thai is it.

Inspired by a dish in my favorite Thai movie, Thai Trap, it’s a base of rice noodles with fried tofu, egg, and bean sprouts.

Easy: Make the noodles by pulsing the dry ingredients in a food processor. Layer the cooked noodles in a glass dish, top with bean sprouts, and add shredded tofu, then top it all off with a fresh green salad.

Cool: Serve it hot with a salad on the side and tons of Thai sweet chili sauce.

Is it Thai? Maybe. Does it count if the noodles are from Trader Joe’s? YES, SO DO IT.

Pad Thai noodles? Yes.

This soup gets better with time, just like a good recipe.

Ful Medames – Egyptian Slow-Roasted Beans

There are some things you can put simply. As for beans, they are so versatile and inexpensive that it doesn’t matter what you do with them. This South American dish has some kick but is completely delicious. Ful medames are sweet and spicy flavored beans simmered in olive oil, a variety of herbs, and spices. And by using a slow cooker you can reap in all that flavor. Served with a yogurt sauce, this dish is one of the healthiest beans you’ll find at your local bodega.

Smoky Brussel Sprouts with Chicken Legs – Shepherd’s Pie

Are you even reading this if you aren’t craving Shepherd’s Pie after that last meal you ate that was full of deep-fried, creamy crap? That was me.

Khao Jee Kai – Thai Curry and Rice Noodles

Mango’s Fried Banana

The famous Orange Bakery – Milk Pudding with Marshmallows

Pandan Ice Cream

Tofu Cheese Pie

Khao Phing Kai – Thai Spicy Chicken

Pho Ga – Beef Noodle Soup

Pong Thai Noodle Soup

Veggie Curry

Delicious Street Food Recipes Each of them even has a recipe for a sweet version that you can have too. To make that easier for you, I made these lists of all the recipes that are vegan and vegetarian, so you can search and find all the recipes you’re looking for.

Gua Bao – Taiwanese Pork Bun

“This pork bun is loaded up with pork, chives, and cured mustard greens. They’re delicious, modest, and you get to keep the bun!”

The Bun Store

Maru Kabab

Maru Kabab offers an interesting twist on the standard shawarma-style sandwiches in the city. Here they marinate lamb and chicken in a blend of spices, such as lemongrass and coriander. Delicious Street Food Recipes Add in some house-made spice pickles and you’ve got yourself a new favorite, fast-food-style sandwich!

Benny in the Hut

Maru Kabab is opening a new location on 63rd Street this Friday at noon. Make sure to stop by and see what all the buzz is about.

Chicken Curry – Turkey, Chicken, Lamb Koftas (Priced to Perish)

Traditionally served at Middle Eastern weddings, chicken koftas have been popular throughout Southeast Asia and India.

A typical New York City hot dog and a delicious churro combo. I love it so much I could eat this thing every day. Oh, and did I mention they’re free? Get on that.

Chocolate Cafe Gremolata

While this is technically a bacon and chorizo breakfast (and I’ll take it anytime), the sweet and savory herb mixture doesn’t sound nearly as dreary as that description makes it sound. I’m willing to bet this tastes even better than the original.

Jamaican Jerk Chowder

Tart and delicious, chowder is just what you need when you’re looking to soak up that post-bar feeling.

Slang Gebbers

Take the humble grilled cheese sandwich, spread some pork sausage and green pepper on one side of the bread and a wedge of tomato on the other and you’ve got the ultimate East Coast slaw.

Some of the amazing street food, like Piri Piri chicken, marinated in chili pepper and lime juice, comes from small-town Jamaica. And these three recipes are so easy and quick to make at home – they’ll have you throwing all your reservations to the wind. Delicious Street Food Recipes Who needs a burrito when you can have jerk chicken?!

Now that I think about it, this is just a great way to have a fresh, light lunch to jumpstart your week. Or maybe the next. Or maybe you’re just up for having this in the fridge until you’re out of the office. That works, too.
